Unser ganzes Leben lang ist Elizabeth Taylor da gewesen; wie die Welt vorher war, daran kann sich kaum noch jemand erinnern. Vor fast sieben Jahrzehnten, 1942, hatLiz Taylor, damals selbst erst knapp zehn Jahre alt, ihre erste Filmrolle gespielt; sie wurde ein Kinderstar, und sie hat sich danach immer wieder neue Generationen erobert - nicht einfach nur Generationen von Zuschauern, auf der Leinwand war sie schon lange nicht mehr zu sehen, auch wenn manche ihrer Filme große Klassiker geworden sind, die so ziemlich jeder schon einmal gesehen hat.Liz Taylor war nicht einfach nur eine Schauspielerin - sie hat mit sich selbst für etwas eingestanden, mit ihrer ganzen Persönlichkeit, der wüsten Biographie und den ausgelebten Emotionen, aus denen sie kein Geheimnis gemacht hat. Eine Legende nennt man eine solche Frau.

Am Ende des Jahrzehnts war sie schon eine Ikone - 1958, als sie Die Katze auf dem heißen Blechdach drehte, galt sie schon als schönste Frau der Welt. Was sie trug war Mode, ihre Frisur wurde nachgeahmt, jeder wusste, wer sie war. So etwas gibt es heute auch noch. Aber Liz Taylor galt nicht nur als schönste, sondern vor allem auch als beste Schauspielerin ihrer Generation. Ihre hysterischen Anfälle, als Martha in Wer hat Angst vor Virginia Woolf? oder als Maggie Pollit in Die Katze auf dem heißen Blechdach waren so eine Art Markenzeichen - und man glaubte jederzeit, dass auch sie selbst, jenseits der Leinwand, wütend wurde mit dem ganzen Körper, liebte aus vollem Herzen, traurig war mit der ganzen Seele.

Die Szenen, die sie als Maggie, die Katze hatte mit Paul Newman - er kann sich nicht damit Abfinden, dass die Zeit ihn verändert, sie steckt voller Leben und verlangt eine Zukunft - gehören zum schönsten, mitreißendsten, was das Kino zu bieten hat. Vincent Canby, viele Jahre Filmkritiker der New York Times, hat einmal über sie geschrieben: Mehr als irgendjemand sonst, der mir einfallen würde, steht Elizabeth Taylor für das gesamte Phänomen des Kinos - was Filme als Kunstform sind und als Industrie und alles, was sie uns bedeuten. Besser kann man es fast nicht zusammenfassen.

Die Rolle in Die Katze auf dem heißen Blechdach brachte ihr ihre zweite Oscarnominierung, mit der vierten und fünften hat sie dann zweimal gewonnen, 1961 mit Telefon Butterfield 8`und 1967 mit Mike Nichols' Ehedrama Wer hat Angst vor Virginia Woolf? Sie wollte von allem immer viel - viel Aufmerksamkeit von ihren Regisseuren, sie legte ein Maximum an Emotion und Anstrengung in ihre Rollen, und sie verlangte dafür viel - die Gage, die sie 1960 für Cleopatra erhielt , eine Million Dollar, war für viele Jahre die höchste, die eine Schauspielerin je bekommen hatte.

Das war der erste Film, den sie mit Richard Burton drehte. Auch die Ehen von Liz Taylor waren legendär - acht Mal war sie insgesamt verheiratet, zweimal, von 1964 bis 1974 und 1975 bis 1976, mit Richard Burton. In den Siebzigern dann wurden die Filmrollen seltener, Schauspielerinnen durften nicht älter werden damals - aber Elizabeth Taylor wurde deswegen nicht weniger berühmt. Sie setzte sich im Kampf gegen Aids ein, nachdem Rock Hudson, mit dem sie befreundet gewesen war, als einer der ersten Filmstars daran gestorben war; sie stand Michael Jackson zur Seite; sie besuchte tapfer, zuletzt im Rollstuhl, Benefizgalas und ließ sich nie unterkriegen, was auch kam. Vielleicht war auch das, die ewig mitfühlende Frau mit dem großen Herzen, nur eine Rolle - aber auch die hat man ihr dann, ein Leben lang, geglaubt. Am 23. März ist Elizabeth Taylor im Alter von 79 Jahren in Los Angeles an Herversagen gestorben.

Elizabeth Taylor was one of the most popular and successful actresses that Hollywood ever produced. Born in England to American parents from Kansas, she held dual citizenship. The tense situation in Europe that led up to World War II led her parents to move to California in 1939. Her striking physical presence, even as a child, led to many child film roles, such as Lassie Come Home, Jane Eyre, and National Velvet, which shot her to instant fame. Her last role as a child star was in Little Women.

Taylor struggled for a couple of years to make the transition to adult roles before finding success in Father of the Bride with Spencer Tracy. She followed this with such classic films as A Place in the Sun (with Montgomery Clift), Giant(with Rock Hudson and James Dean), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (with Paul Newman), and BUtterfield 8 (with her husband, Eddie Fisher), for which Taylor earned an Oscar for Best Actress.

Taylor was almost as famous for her many marriages as she was for her film work. Her husbands included hotel heir Conrad Hilton, actor Michael Wilding, movie producer Michael Todd, singer Eddie Fisher, and Senator John Warner. However, she is best remembered for her two marriages to noted British actor Richard Burton. The two met while filming Cleopatra, Taylor’s signature role. The couple went on to make ten more films together, including Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, (which earned Taylor her second Best Actress Oscar), Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, and the made-for-TV film Divorce His, Divorce Hers, as well as a stage version of Noel Coward’s Private Lives.

Although her star power decreased starting in the 1970′s, she continued to appear in films, including Stephen Sondheim’s musical A Little Night Music and Agatha Christie’s The Mirror Crack’d. Her last movie role was in the live action film The Flintstones in 1994. Taylor made her Broadway and London West End debut in 1982 in Lillian Hellman’s Little Foxes. She also appeared in many television shows, including the daytime soaps All My Children and General Hospital, as well as the miniseries North and South and two appearances onThe Simpsons. She also starred in the made-for-tv movie These Old Broads in 2001, alongside Debbie Reynolds, Shirley MacLaine, and Joan Collins.

In her later years, Taylor was well-known as an activist and fund-raiser for AIDS related charities and events. She created a foundation for AIDS research and endowed several hospitals. She also produced her own line of jewelry and perfume. She was well-known as one of the closest friends to pop star Michael Jackson. Elizabeth Taylor suffered from many physical problems throughout her life, including five broken backs, hip replacements, a brain tumor, osteoporosis, and congestive heart failure, which plagued her for the last 7 years of her life and finally led to her death. As she reflected on her struggles in life, she said:
